Depression hits most of us at some point in our lives. Women are twice more likely to suffer depression than men. People experience depression differently, and at first it may be difficult to say if you are merely feeling tired and weak, or if you’re really depressed.

Common symptoms of clinical depression are fatigue, lack of energy and motivation, inability to fight against a deep and persistent sense of sadness, and a feeling of blah permeating activities that you normally take pleasure in.

You may be preoccupied with negative thoughts, with a cynical eye to the future, or numbness and emptiness. If these feelings last more than a few weeks or if they return again and again, this could be a sign that you are depressed.

Here are some steps to get rid of depression. Keep in mind that if your depression persists despite trying these tips, you need to see a doctor. Depression is a real physical illness that is fatal in numbers rivaling cancer – it’s nothing to trifle with.

1) Opt for a long brisk walk or jog in the park. Training is known to release feel good chemicals in the brain and research has found that outdoor exercise, mood and self-esteem, and reduce the amount of tension and anger.

2) Listen to music, learn a new instrument or take a dance class. Channeling your energy into the music can be exhilarating.

3) Treat yourself to a massage or spa healing. Overcoming depression can sometimes be as simple as putting yourself first and recharging. Make a simple goal to do something just for yourself each day. Not hours, nothing elaborate – but an achievable goal you can reach.

The above steps are very effective in getting rid of depression and making your life happening and exciting. But remember – if the depression persists, consult a physician.
