How to Kill Fruit Flies – Do-It-Yourself Solutions
There are several different variations on this theme of making your own reply trap and solutions. They all come back to one main principle — that is, you need to put something sweet in the bottom of the container and then create a cover for the container which allows the fruit flies to go into the container to get the bait but will not allow them to come out.
One variation is setting out a bowl or a jar with something sweet in the bottom, such as a bit of fruit juice or sugar mixed with water or perhaps a slice of fruit like an apple, and then covering the top with plastic wrap and had small holes poked in it or a funnel made out of paper which has only a small hole pointing downward in the bottom. Both of these tracks allow the fruit fly to go in through the very small openings and then they cannot find their way out again. These types of fruit fly traps are very simple and inexpensive to make.
Another style of fruit fly trap does not have a covering or a lid over the top of the container that you place this sweet bait in, but rather the bait is the mechanism by which the fruit flies are trapped. In this scenario, you leave out a glass of wine or a bottle of beer or something similar with a little bit of the liquid left in the bottom, and you leave it out overnight. The fruit flies are attracted to the sweet liquid, and when they attack it, they become entangled and drown. This is very simple to do, you merely leave the glass or bottle out overnight and when you come back in the morning rinse it out or recap it and throw it away.
