How to Get Rid of Black Mold

Black mold, unlike other kinds of mold, is thick and opaque and has a greenish black tinge. Another distinguishing feature of black mold is that it grows over a given area extremely quickly. It is also very aggressive in spreading to different parts of your home or office because the spores spread through the air. Other indicators that you may have a black mold problem include a distinctive moldy smell, discoloration on your walls or ceilings, and warping of your floorboards.

It’s never a bad idea to actually seal off the room where the black mold problem is occurring with plastic tarp and duct tape until you can solve the problem. In this way, you can isolate the problem and deal with it without the fear of the spores spreading through the air into different parts of the home.

When it comes to actually cleaning the mold affected areas, you can start with a mixture of dish soap in warm water, and scrub the affected areas thoroughly. Make sure you to not only scrub the places where the black mold is visible, because often the seeds of the black mold will have spread beyond what you can see with the naked eye. Give all adjacent areas, and even the whole room, a good hard scrubbing.

After having described the entire affected room with warm water and dish soap, then follow that up with another scrubbing with a disinfectant like distilled vinegar or bleach. This will kill any mold spores left on the surface of the walls, ceiling, and floor. Make sure, of course, to dry the area completely when you are finished.

If the mold is in your bathroom, there are many highly effective over-the-counter mold solutions that you can also try. Don’t give up if the first one doesn’t work, sometimes one brand will not be effective on a certain strain of mold, but the next one you try will.

And don’t forget, if all else fails, call in a professional. The absolute last thing that you ever want to do is just ignore it. Mold is one of the worst problems that you can ignore. Black mold will spread quickly if not dealt with immediately.
