How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Dandruff is a difficult problem, because not only is it physically irritating, but there is also an aspect of embarrassment to it. I mean, really, who likes to have the world see them with their shoulders covered with white flakes? Or to be obsessively scratching your head? And it’s not like you can just call up your friends and be like, “Hey, I have a horrible dandruff problem. Have you ever had a horrible dandruff problem? How did you handle it?”

Well, that’s why we solve these things anonymously, right? We ask our very BEST friend for advice – the internet! Hey, internet, what’s the best method to get rid of dandruff?

Let’s take a look:

Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet – Like so many other physical issues, the root of the issue that’s happening on the outside of your body (dandruff) starts with what’s happening on the inside of your body. Eating foods which provide a healthy balance of macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbs) helps to balance your entire system. This won’t rid you of dandruff on its own, but if you don’t start off with this foundation, the rest of your work is going to be much, much harder.

Reduce Stress – Just like your diet, having a high stress level can interfere with your physical health in so many different ways. Over-production of stress chemicals in your system can block your body from producing the healthy natural oils that your scalp requires in order to stop flakes from forming. Again, just like with a balanced diet, cutting out stress and increasing relaxation probably won’t solve the dandruff problem entirely on its own (although it could!), but if you don’t get that part under control first, it will hamper the rest of your efforts.

Wash Hair Regularly, Preferably With Specially Formulated Dandruff Shampoo – The first thing you will need to do is make sure that you create and stick to a regular schedule of washing your hair. If you haven’t already switched to a dandruff shampoo, also, you need to do that right away. Don’t get caught up in only the major brands you will find in a drugstore, either. Go to a beauty supply shop and ask the clerk what brands he or she recommends. They might be a bit more expensive, but this is your one and only noggin we’re talking about here – throw some cash at the problem! If your head ain’t worth it, what is?

Mix Two Crushed Asprin Tablets in With Your Shampoo – One thing you can try to kick up the dandruff annhialation to the next level is to crush up a couple of asprin tablets into a fine powder, and mix them up with your shampoo. Wash and rinse as normal. Try this for a few days to a week before judging the efficacy with your particular case.

Rub Salt into Your Scalp Prior to Shampooing –

Use Baking Soda Instead of Shampoo – This next tip is going to seem VERY counterintuitive, because everyone has grown up using liquid on their heads to wash their hair from before they even had conscious memory, so to use powder instead may feel a bit bizarre, prepare yourself. For this method, you wet your hair exactly like you would if you were about to wash with shampoo, but instead of squeezing shampoo into your hand, you shake out a palmful of baking soda and massage that into your scalp instead. Massage for a few minutes, making sure to cover your scalp thoroughly, and then rinse it all out, equally thoroughly. Just like the asprin, give it a week or two before deciding if it’s working for you or not.

Limit Use of Styling Products – I know when your scalp is dry and flaky, the temptation is to rub a lot of gunk (sorry…PRODUCT ) into your hair to counteract that. RESIST THIS URGE, PEOPLE!! It’s doing much more harm than good. Until your dandruff problem is completely and totally taken care of, you need to cut out styling products from your life entirely. I know. You’ve broken up with boyfriends that you didn’t feel as strongly about as you do your hair product, but let it go, girl! Just like that rotten boyfriend, they’re not doing you any favors. After you have the dandruff problem well in hand, and have for a few weeks, you can start slowly adding your products back in, one by one, and judging your scalp’s reaction to them.

Use Organic Herbal Oils in Place of Hair Products – In the terrifying void left by abandoning all of your go-to styling products, you can use organic herbal oils to give your hair shine, and even some control. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not going to hold it in place like gel, mousse or hairspray – but, hey, the natural look is in, and it’s not like your dandruff flakes are winning any beauty contests! It’s worth it! Plus, you might get addicted to how delicious they feel and smell on your scalp! Once you get used to anything natural on your skin, it’s SO hard to go back to synthetic!
